Pike Comp 2015

Hi All

The pike comp as usual was fished in Carton House, many thanks to all the staff who made us feel welcome on the day and to the management of Carton House for allowing us to hold the annual pike completion there.
Only 3 fish were caught this year 2 of which were fine pike 1no 13 pound & 1no 16 pound caught by Anton Hokera which would prove the winner in the end well done Anton.
As usual Donal cooked up a storm on the BBQ many thanks to him.
With a day filled with good weather, good food & a few pike all round a good day.
Anton with his winning Pike 16 pound, thats Michael Callaghan holding it, Anton is trying to start a new trend of photo bombing your own photo.
All thats left now for this year is to wish all a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year and we hope Santa brings you all some nice fishing gear for next year.

Fish of the Year

Hi All

With the season at a close its time to declare Fish of the Year which was a fine 20.5 inch trout caught by Doug Backman on a balmy evening in June this year well done Doug below are some pictures to enjoy.

Doug wrote;

Hi There,

I had my personal best fish yesterday evening on on a dry fly.

It measured the fish against my rod and then matched the writing on the rod with the tape.

It measures about 20.5 inches, id say it weighed about 2.5 ibs.

I just went home after catching it as i figured I couldn't top it... Loving my first year on the river!

Doug.

The Liffey Shield

Hi All

The Liffey Shield the annual Liffey River inter club competion was fished yesterday on the Rye River (a tributary of the Liffey). The Rye was chosen to host the event this year to celebrate the Leixlip & District Anglers 25th anniversary.
It was due to be staged in May when the river was fishing brilliantly but was cancelled to flood and was rescheduled to September.
Conditions were difficult with water levels which more resembled the summer months than the first weekend in September and bright sun light during the day were not conducive to catching lots of Trout.
Teams from Clane Anglers, Dublin Trout Anglers & Leixlip & District Anglers contested the Shield with North Kildare & Kilcullen angling clubs unable to attend due to prior commitments.
It was a red letter day for the hosts as our team won the event for the first time in the clubs history, with our own Dermot Mitchell finishing top rod we are certain you will join us in congratulating the team who consisted of Gianluca Paolella (Team Captain) Brian Coffey, Jason Nolan & Dermot Mitchell very well done lads and well done to all the anglers who stuck at it for the day in less than perfect conditions. Heres a few photos below, more were taken on the day which we will post as soon as we get them. Also thanks to the Salmon Leap Inn for hosting the presentation afterwards the sandwiches were very welcome.

The Sedge Shield was fished on 15 of Aug and a lovely evening greeted the anglers who turned out for the comp, the weather was much better than last year thankfully and a lot more fish were caught, with almost every angler catching something.
The competition was won in the end by Aidan Crean with an overall total of 57 inches, Jason Nolan was second with 31 inches and Dermot Mitchell was 3rd with 26.5 inches.
Well done to all heres a few pictures below taken on the evening.

Trout League Round 5

Hi All
The Trout League round 5 was fished last Saturday night and a lovely calm, warm night greeted the anglers who came out for some fishing and a bit of craic. The fishing got better as the night progressed with the big boys coming out after dark. The competition was won in the end by Gianluca who caught 8 fish for a total of 90.5 inches, Dermot Mitchell was 2nd with 6 fish for 62.5 inches overall. This was Gianluca's first win although he as been knocking on that door for a while so none of us were surprised by his win, well done Luca. Also of note Sean Melia got 3rd place his best result to date well done Sean your getting closer the hard work is paying off. Thankfully we have had a bit of rain recently which may help the early evening fishing as water levels have been quite low, the low water levels have also put the fish under a bit of stress so please exercise caution when putting back fish to ensure they recover properly as a few dead fish have been seen recently so  best to make sure they have recovered before release.

The Intel Trophy

Hi All
The Intel Trophy was fish last night on the Rye and a fine evening greeted a fine turnout, all were in good spirits. The river was a little low but nothing to complain about and a good hatch came on at about 10pm in some parts of the river other parts saw no hatch at all. Dermot Mitchell won this competition with 8 fish for 80 inches overall length, Jason Nolan was 2nd with 5 fish for 49 inches and Aidan Crean & Kevin Tipper were joint 3rd with 38 inches each. Donal Connelly caught the largest fish of the evening at 15.5 inches and Dermot took the most fish bonus point. All enjoyed the event spent by the river even if some spent most of the evening yapping rather than fishing (thats the Leixlip Anglers for you a good yap is as important as a good fish). Heres some pictures taken on the evening.

The First Salmon of the Year Trophy

Hi All
The Leixlip Anglers got to award a Trophy this year which hasn't been awarded for many years. The First Salmon of the year by a Leixlip Anglers member and it went to none other than Brian Coffey who's already caught a few salmon on the Liffey this year, well done Brian. Its great to see this trophy awarded again and since the lifting of the Salmon fishing ban on the Liffey to allow catch and release Brian has shown many of us how fruitful Salmon fishing can be on the Liffey.

Leixlip Festival Competition 2015

Hi All
The Festival competition was fished on Friday 28th May, a cool evening greeted a fine turn out for the comp. Cold weather or not none were to be discouraged with the majority of anglers catching some fish. There wasn't much of a rise but some good fish were caught the biggest of which was 16 inches caught by the winner Kevin Tipper, Dermot Mitchell was 2nd and has now opened a decent gap at the top of the Trout League and Anton Hokera was 3rd well done to all who caught fish on a difficult night. The trophy was presented at the Salmon Leap Pub on the Monday evening Below are some pictures taken on the night & at the presentation on Monday.

May On The Rye

Hi All
Chris Haines was back out on the river recently he sent us in a post & a few pictures of fish he's caught recently.
Chris wrote;
Well after four fruitless sessions in April and May I finally connected to some good trout on the Rye thanks to the recent sedge hatches. Last night I had a better fish but did not weigh or measure it. I estimate it at 16 inches and one of the best trout I have had on the Rye. Unfortunately it had a legion and some damage to its tail area but a nice fish all the same. Sedge pattern worked well and thanks to Jason for the advice 3 days previously. Attached photos of three different fish.Chris.

Thanks for the update Chris if anyone has any more photos feel free to send them in and we will post them for you.

May update

Hi All
Sorry for the delays in updates we were so busy with the Liffey shield preparations we completely forgot to up date the Trout League Table, well its done now with Dermot sitting on top at the moment check out the Trout league page to view. On Liffey shield news after all the hard work by so many members the river was a wash out, the night before the competition the river flooded so it doesn't matter how hard you work at something if mother nature doesn't want it happening she will stop it.
The Liffey Shield will now be rescheduled for later in the year. In other news even though we have been caught in perpetual winter the fishing has still proved good with some fine catches being reported and some real red letter days being had down on the river lately, heres a few pics from April & May below

Kevin Tipper had this fine 18 inch Trout at the end of April

Gianluca had this nice 16 inch trout during May

Jason had this 14 3/4 inch Trout Yesterday

Liffey Shield Preparations

Hi All
The preparations for the hosting the Liffey Shield are going well the river has been pruned from Yellow Walls Bridge to the confluence it took 3days to complete, a very large well done to the lads who got stuck in over the past week you did a really good job.
However the work isn't finished yet we will still need to do a clean up there is rubbish in the river at several points which will need to come out before the 9th May, we could do with all hands who can spare a few hours to help, we will schedule it for next weekend and confirm with a text during the week as to which day, time etc, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Also as the river is now in prime condition for fishing, if anyone is down fishing and see any rubbish / branches in the river by all means remove them, every little helps.

The Hawthorn Cup

Hi all
The Hawthorn cup was fished on Saturday 11th April, it was a little bit chilly but quite sunny and for the most part a pleasant day with most if not all anglers catching fish. Team Wychwood were out in force and determined to have a good day, well they brought enough gear to ensure that. Dermott Mitchell won this comp with a net bursting 17 fish for an over all of 180inches the biggest 16 inches, his first win in the club, although he's been knocking on the door for some time now well done Dermott. As a matter of fact Team Wychwood made it 1,2,3, with Gianluca 2nd with 71.5 inches  & Michael Callaghan 3rd with 54 inches well done to all.
In other news as was announced at the start of the year as part of our 25th year celebrations we will be hosting the Liffey shield this year on the 9th May on the Rye, there is a major pruning & cleaning process underway at the moment, the river has been pruned from Kellystown bridge to the fence at the end of the Confey College football pitches with only the stretch from there to the confluence remaining which will be done this week, a major undertaking by any standard. Very well done to all those who took part & helped over the weekend, a large cleanup will be required closer to the date to ensure the river is in pristine condition for the Liffey Shield and in turn then for the rest of the season.
As noted above the pruning is complete down to Ryevale so if you do go fishing this week you will be pleasantly surprised at the ease of casting in the river.
We will sign off now but will keep you all informed of the big clean up closer to the Liffey Shield.
A few photos below taken at the Hawthorn Cup.

Paddy's Day Comp

Hi All
The Paddy's Day comp was fished on Sunday last with a good turn out even though it clashed with Mothers day. We also had a new chef in the form of Aidan Crean who cooked up a storm in Donal's absence, all enjoyed the sausage and rasher sandwiches, a little tipple and a bit of banter before the fishing, Team Wychwood were out in force and ready for a good days fishing (thanks Paul for quote of the day) and weren't to be disappointed as the river is fishing very well at the moment with a good average stamp of fish being reported daily. As a matter of fact delays in this report are due in no small part to how well the river is fishing at present. The comp was fished in cool conditions with a chilly easterly breeze but warmed up as the day passed, water temps were only 6.5 degrees but that didn't diswade the trout who were happy to take a nymph or 2. The Comp was won on the day by Jason Nolan with a fish of 13 inches, Kevin McLaughlin & Gianluca were second both with 12 inch fish.
Even though 13 inches was the smallest fish to win this comp in many years the average return was much higher than normal with most anglers catching fish in the 10 - 12 inch range Jason caught 10 for an over all length of 106 inches and Dermott Mitchell caught 9 for an overall length of 85 inches and most others catching a good few too there were 41 fish over the 8inch limit caught in total on the day, a good day by any measure.
With regular reports of large numbers of good fish in the 12 - 14 inch bracket coming in daily its really a must to get on the river at the moment and enjoy the fun. Dermot & Gianluca weren't to mis out and were down on St Patricks day with a hat full of fish for there days endeavours, they along with several other anglers have reported back that there is a very good hatch of olives coming of between 10am - 12pm each day with fish taking the dry fly quite happily during this time.
Outside those hours the nymph is fishing very well indeed with fish being taken on a load of different patterns flash backs, hare's ear, bead heads, present tails all working well.
The next comp will be the Hawthorn Cup in April hopefully the river will continue its recent good form until then and maybe a little bit warmer perhaps if its not too much to ask.
Don't forget to send in any reports of enjoyable days on the river.

1st March 2015

Hi All
Well its finally here the 1st of March,  although you wouldn't recognise it as March more like January. However that didn't stop our usual die hards from fishing oh no! if anything it just made them more determined and it paid off with a lovely crisp morning a few fish and a warm cup of coffee or two.
Although all die hards have to give in to nature eventually by one o'clock things had deteriorated so badly that the game was called on account of the weather. Ah well 182 more fishing days left, fair play to all the members who braved the 1st. A few pics below taken on the day to wet your appetite.

The first of the year 13" healthy & plump (over wintered well)

It was a lovely morning until the hail and snow came

Then the hail and snow came! and even the die hards went home

I'm only wet on the outside, but couldn't be much wetter.

Where did this snowy village come from? it wasn't here on our way up the river

Trout League 2014

Hi All
Just a round up of the Trout league Kevin Tipper defended his title in the Trout League this year with the narrowest of victories, just 1 point separated 1st and 2nd in what proved to be a very tight year in the Trout League, mid way through the year any one of six people could have gone on to win it.
See the pic below of the presentation of the trophy to Kevin at the AGM well done Kevin.
